Moda Block Heads 4: Block 3
We have three blocks now! Are you starting to envision your finished quilt?
Block #3, Kouign Amann, is designed by Laurie Simpson of Minick & Simpson. I'm completely in love with it because it was named after pastry.
Did you notice in the instructions it says that all seams are a scant 1/4"?
If you don't know what this means, don't brush it off. This could be the very reason your block isn't the right size and points aren't lining up.
Typically quilters sew with a 1/4" seam allowance. However, there are some variables that come into play that you need to account for. The weight of your thread and the type of fabric you are sewing with can actually make your seam allowance larger or less than 1/4". That is why we must sew at a scant 1/4".
It truly is all in the details, so please take the time to master this skill. If you are a visual person like me, I have a link to a video by Laura Coia of Sew Very Easy. She does an excellent job explaining this concept and how you can test your machine to get the correct seam allowance. https://youtu.be/3j0wFhr8Jfk
The Moda Basic Methods and Information also goes over this.
Once you have this trick mastered, pat yourself on the back my friend. You are a professional quilter in my book and you deserve to treat yourself. How about lunch and a pedicure? Perhaps Kouign Amann? Happy sewing this week, you got this!
